E-Books Are Here!

We are pleased to announce that the Van Buren Public Library now offers e-books for its patrons.  We recently joined a group of Evergreen libraries in the eDigital Indiana Consortium to not only offer e-books for our patrons but also audio books for ipods and mp3 players.

There are a few instructions and guidelines you will need to read through before getting started.  Our experience thus far has shown the process to be an easy one.  As always please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Sites for Book Lovers

Here are a couple of helpful and fun websites for those who are serious about their reading.  Staff at the Van Buren Public Library make regular use of these sites and we encourage you to take a look!

Good Reads - This site allows users to build their own "catalogs."  Put together your own "shelves" of what you have read, what you are currently reading, and what you are planning to read.  You can also join discussion groups, start a book club, and post and read reviews.  Users can also search for new books and get recommendations for new ones to try.

Fantastic Fiction - This site has bibliographies for over 30,000 authors where you can find out more information about authors, their backgrounds, and complete list of all their works.  There is also information on over 350,000 books. Throughout the site, just click on a book to see its cover picture, description and publication details.  You can also find information on different series' of books by authors and make sure that you read all the books in a series in the right order!

New On the Shelves

Lincoln Display at Marion Public Library

This year marks the sesquicentennial of the Civil War. In honor of this pivotal point in the history of our country, Marion Public Library is pleased to offer a traveling exhibit and a series of programs about the War and its effect on our nation, our state, and our county.

The traveling exhibit, Lincoln: The Constitution & the Civil War is located on the second floor of the library in the magazine section and will be at MPL through June 8. It is brought here through a grant from the American Library Association, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the National Constitution Center.  For more information please visit the Marion Public Library website . . . located here.

Re-cycle Your Cell Phone

If you are like many other people, you don’t quite know what to do with your old cell phone when you get a new one. Throw it out? Put it in the recycle bin? The EPA has a solution for this problem, one that’s much better than a box of old phones hidden in the garage. They recommend e-cycling your phone. This has a triple benefit – you clear out your old phone collection, it keeps usable materials out of landfills, and many donated cell phones are given to charities to be sold at a discount or given to those in need. For example, Verizon Wireless uses old cell phones to provide a helpline for victims of domestic violence and AT&T uses funds from recycled phones to buy prepaid phone cards for active duty military personnel. Other programs take the phones apart and reuse the metals for new products. The EPA page on e-cycling provides links to programs offered by various manufacturers and service providers. Next time you get a new phone, join the over 14 million Americans who recycled their phones in 2007 to help out the environment and your community!
