The biggest night in Hollywood is the annual Academy Awards, where Oscars are awarded for the film and movie industry. This ceremony has been held for the last 84 years and features the gold-plated statues, red carpet coverage, and stars of the entertainment world in their glamorous dresses and outfits. Here are a few of the nominees that we have available to check out at the library:

The Help: Set in Mississippi during the 1960s, Skeeter (Stone) is a southern society girl who returns from college determined to become a writer, but turns her friends' lives -- and a Mississippi town -- upside down when she decides to interview the black women who have spent their lives taking care of prominent southern families.  Despite Skeeter's life-long friendships hanging in the balance, she and Aibileen continue their collaboration and soon more women come forward to tell their stories -- and as it turns out, they have a lot to say. Along the way, unlikely friendships are forged and a new sisterhood emerges.

Midnight in Paris: Gil and Inez travel to Paris as a tag-along vacation on her parents' business trip. Gil is a successful Hollywood writer but is struggling on his first novel. He falls in love with the city and thinks they should move there after they get married, but Inez does not share his romantic notions of the city or the idea that the 1920s was the golden age. When Inez goes off dancing with her friends, Gil takes a walk at midnight and discovers what could be the ultimate source of inspiration for writing. Gil's daily walks at midnight in Paris could take him closer to the heart of the city but further from the woman he's about to marry.

Moneyball: Oakland A's GM Billy Beane is handicapped with the lowest salary constraint in baseball. If he ever wants to win the World Series, Billy must find a competitive advantage. Billy is about to turn baseball on its ear when he uses statistical data to analyze and place value on the players he picks for the team.

The southeastern face of Mount Rushmore in South Dakota's Black Hills National Forest is the site of four gigantic carved sculptures depicting the faces of U.S. Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. Led by the sculptor Gutzon Borglum, work on the project began in 1927 and was finally completed in 1941. Over that time period, some 400 workers erected the sculpture under dangerous conditions, removing a total of 450,000 tons of rock in order to create the enormous carved heads, each of which reached a height of 60 feet (18 meters). In sculptor Gutzon Borglum's original design, the four presidents were meant to be represented from the waist up, but insufficient funding brought the carving to a halt after completion of their faces. Known as the "Shrine of Democracy," Mount Rushmore welcomes upwards of 2 million visitors every year, and is one of America's most popular tourist attractions.

The Young Hoosier Book Award was established in 1974, and then expanded to three categories in 1992: Kindergarten through 3rd grade; 4th through 6th grade, and 6th through 8th grade. The Award is designed to encourage student reading by having students, teachers, parents, and media specialists identify 20 of their favorite books in each category, of which one winner is chosen in each grade division every year. Criteria for selection include requirements that the book must be published within the last five years and be in print at the time of selection.

We recently added to our collection 15 of the nominees in the K-3 category.  We have these on display downstairs in the children's section.

The Super Bowl week is clearly about more than just a football game.  The NFL has designed a complete "experience" in Indianapolis this week.  If you are like most of us and can't afford to buy tickets to the big game it's fortunately not too late to get in on some of the fun.

A three block area of downtown Indy has been transformed into a festival of football with plenty of fun games, exhibits, and attractions.

Check out the Indianapolis Super Bowl website (just click the logo at the top of the page) and find out all the information about the events, transportation, and costs.
